Is Beef Fat and Beeswax a Goood Bullet Lube

  1. Anybody use this for bullet lube? Going to try some of and when it warms up here and gets rid of this snow.I guess the buffalo hunters used it so I'm going to have to give it a try in my 44 special.
  2. The size and number of lube groves on your bullet and velocity will be huge factors. Big groves and low velocity are more optimal conditions.
  3. Only issue I could think of is beef tallow tends to get "sticky" when it does rancid(which it will do in about 6 months at room temperature) and this may result in dirt/debris sticking to the cartridge.
  4. The closest I've come is in making Paul Mathews BP Lube, but that called for Neatsfoot Oil. It was a good recipe and I actually won some matches with it. At some point I transitioned to SPG and then DGL lube.

Concocting homemade lube just got to be another thing I had to do to get ready for a match.

  5. I have shot with Mr.matthews at our club matches here on Towanda Pa. Very informative fellow. His wife was a good shot as well.
  6. I would boil it in water let cool and collect it when cold, then add some bees wax to stiffen it up. If you have shallow lube groves of not many of a long barrel you can make lube cookies for under the bullet to help out.
  7. I plan on keeping it in the freezer and maybe add some mint oil to it for aroma. Lol
  8. It works with blackpowder. I have not tried it with smokeless and don't know anyone who has. As noted, the primary issue is that it goes bad. That is why mutton tallow was favored over other animal fats, back in the day.
  9. I used chap stick. I had some lubed bullets the lube came out during shipping. It worked for 38 special loads.
  10. I had that happen to me once with some I bought last year,so I just removed it from all the bullets and powder coated them..

  11. What not pork fat(grease)so you get the smell of BACON with every shot!:D

  15. What about Duck Fat?

the only problem with animals fat is it's very low melting point.

Duck fat is too good to waste.
  17. This thread brought up a memory I'd like to forget, think it was a documentary on a Asian country where they would go into the sewers and Scrape the hardened fat from the grease traps. It was then sold to the local restaurants lol. So all kinds of uses for fat lol.

    Render it.
    Mix 3:1 with beeswax...

...as good as anything you can buy.

  19. Yes. Crisco too. Also used it to lube rifle bullets for suppressor work in the 70's. Adding beeswax helps keep it in place. You might want to add a felt or cardboard disk between the powder and bullet base.
  20. I'll use shorting on top for the cap and balls, cheaper then bore butter and I think it works better with pyrodex keeps the burnt stuff softer and seems to lube fine for the shooting I do. Pretty easy to smear on to.
  21. has anybody tried Hydrogenated shortening oil? so much persevere, it should last forever!

    here a thought… Bacon Fat!

  22. Problem with bacon fat is the salt and other cureing stuff that maybe in it, probably fine for a few shots then a good cleaning. You could boil it a bunch of times to fry to get the salt out.
